Sammy Gibbons (she/they) is a journalist and fiction writer based in Brooklyn, New York. She is a culture reporter for the USA TODAY Network Atlantic Group focused on identity and underrepresented communities, most often LGBTQ+ topics. Sammy also co-leads Gannett’s Employee Resource Group for LGBTQ+ staff and allies called Pride Forward.
Previously, Sammy was the sole news reporter for the Door County Advocate. Those stories appeared in papers across the USA Today Network-Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. She hosted, scripted and produced a weekly video series called “The Hinge” that highlighted must-know Door County news. Her byline has appeared in USA TODAY, The Thirlby, Our Lives Magazine, Madison Magazine and Vinyl Me, Please among others. She served as Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Cardinal, the University of Wisconsin’s oldest independent student newspaper.
The Wisconsin Newspaper Association named Sammy Rookie Reporter of the Year in 2019. The year prior, she received a Bronze award in the Best Short Hard Feature Story category from The Milwaukee Press Club for an article about health services staff at the University of Wisconsin digging up decades of missing student death data.
